Customer Review
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 July 2018Looks good. Well made but over priced.I was a little disappointed as this is just an external housing containing a hue bulb. I was expected this to be more advanced. Really I could have just bought any external housing and just used a hue white bulb.PS I bought the non Hue model and fitted it with a Hue Bulb. Working fine now for the last month or so. Confirmed really there is no need to buy this particular model.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2018Great but expensiveThe product itself is superb, however this is just the regular outdoor light with a Hue E27 bulb included. You can purchase the two separately at a fraction of the cost.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 June 2019Stylish and easy to installYes, I will mimic what other reviewers have said - this is for all intents and purposes a standard outdoor light enclosure with a Philips Hue bulb included. But I don’t think this diminishes the product in any way.Of course you could buy any light enclosure, and there are many that are cheaper than this, but if you subtract the cost of the Hue bulb that is included then it’s really not so bad.The unit is quality, reasonably lightweight, and easy to install. But most importantly it’s actually made to fit the slightly larger size of the Hue bulb.Everything easily paired with my existing Hue bridge, even from outside. The light shines brightly through the opaque enclosure and lights the vicinity pretty well.I would recommend this product.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2021Not a good experienceIt's a £15 hue bulb in what feels like a fairly cheap housing. The housing in my (apparently new) box also had what felt like sand over it in places. When lit, the lower half of the enclosure is getting vastly more light than the upper half (because of the angle of the light - the cheap feeling white plastic diffuser doesn't really diffuse that much). It also comes with just the bulb and the light housing - you supply your own screws/wall plugs etc to screw in the two mounting points.A warning to people who might have it:When removing external cover (e.g. to change bulb), the cover literally falls away as soon as the screws are removed - so be sure to hold it in place when you're removing them or the whole outside of it just drops off. With the tiny torx allan key provided, I was using two hands to make this easier - and now I've got a lovely scratch and some damage to my new light's housing from this already. Also the hue bridge/bulb combination that I had bundled with this has pretty awful range.Couldn't reach from my upstairs bedroom to a front door (normal size UK house) - so unless you've already got a house full of hue lights, it's not a good experience having to find somewhere to have an ethernet cable that's also close to the light. If I hadn't wired ethernet ports all over my house this summer, I'd have had a job finding somewhere discreet to put it.Final note:If you're new to hue, like I am, remember to write down the serial number of the bulb first. You can't easily pair it any other way - and you'll have to take the front off (see above) to get it.It's a light though, and it works, so it gets stars for at least doing that.Overall experience as a new customer to Hue:Pretty disappointed. Not something I'd recommend to anyone looking to start a hue ecosystem.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2018Nice housing but just a caseAs mentioned this is just a nice housing for a Hue bulb with no additional intelligence. The bulb itself does have a different part number to the normal bulbs so I am hoping it is at least externally tested but it could just be a standard one.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2020Love hue lights and this is a great outdoor lightBought this last year for out the front of the house during prime day and we love the look and function of it so much that this year we bought one for the back door (again during prime day). Wouldn’t like to pay full price for it as it is pricey but I do see hue lights as a bit of a long term investment so if I’d had to pay full price I probably still would have but it was great to get a discount. It’s very easy to set up and add to our existing lighting scheme and it’s a lovely bright outdoor light. Particularly like that we can set it to come on for us arriving home so we never need to leave a light on wasting energy unnecessarily.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2020A handsome outdoor lightImpressed with this light, which is basically a nice case around a Hue bulb, and so long as you have everything else required it should work perfectly.took me about 15 minutes to install, replacing an old wall light but it's basically attach the wires, secure the backplate to the wall and slide the case over the front of it it.It gives a very decent amount of soft, warm light (obviously you can change the output or the bulb if you wish) which is welcoming and bright enough to highlight trespassersWould recommend
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2020Expensive and not that brightAs with all Philips Hue, you’re paying for the eco system, that said, these lights at full price take the biscuit - so my advice is to wait til they’re on sale, as I did. On arrival the product seemed pretty basic, a plastic body with aluminium surround and a hue bulb included. Once installed, it does look pretty nice, chic, but 800 or so lumens isn’t that bright if you really need to light up an area - these lights are more of a nice, expensive, glow!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2019Overpriced, but good qualityMassively overpriced, but good quality, as you'd expect from Philips. As others have mentioned, it's EXACTLY the same as the my garden version, with the addition of a hue white bulb.Wouldn't have bought on its own, but as part of a deal with the Hue Outdoor sensor it was worth it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2021Great but not perfectMotion detector works perfectly once set up, have to manually step in if you switch the switch during the day as needs the motion to activate the timer to turn off. wall light is okay but my only grip is it only really half lights up at the bottom due to the light hanging downwards inside, would of liked I nice even light output
Customer questions and answers
- Can this be used as a regular light without a Philips Hie system?Yes, you can wire this light with power via a regular light switch that you switch on/off.
- Could this connect to a Ring Doorbell and come on when it senses motion?Yes it can using IFTTT. Although if you are going to add more lights which may not be in the motion zone for the door you can also add a Philips Hue outdoor motion sensor. That is how I control mine. You have more control over how you want your lights to react etc.
- I can't have the cable entering into the backplate from the rear, so Is it possible to have the cable entering through the top of the casing ?If it’s on to brickwork you may be able to feed the cable in between the mortar lines but it would be difficult to feed the wire in through the the top without having to drill/file part of the casing. - Has this got motion detection on itNo you need to buy the exterior detector or internal for motion detection. Or you can buy a switch for on off.
