“Typical range” is the middle half of the market — a quarter of products sit below it and a quarter above. The change column compares only products tracked in both quarters, with that matched count shown in brackets.

Are the “sale” prices real?

Full findings, method and limitations: our study of UK sale-price honesty.

Only 15 products carried a “was” price this quarter — too few to put a percentage on without overstating what we know. We would rather say that than publish a figure built on a handful of products.

How this is calculated

Prices are recorded by an automated tracker that checks products on Amazon.co.uk and records what it finds. This report covers 2026-07-01 to 2026-09-30 and 27,216 products across 8 top-level categories.

  • Products, not price readings. We average each product’s price over the quarter first, then take the median across products. Averaging raw readings would let one heavily-tracked product outweigh dozens of others.
  • Quarter-on-quarter is a matched sample. The change compares only products tracked in both quarters — the same approach official price indices use. Comparing everything tracked in one quarter against everything in the next would measure how our catalogue grew, not how prices moved.
  • Small samples are not published. A category needs at least 30 products for a median, and at least 30 matched products before we report a change. Below that the figure is left blank rather than estimated.
  • The discount test uses each product’s own average. Judging a claimed saving against that product’s median would be marginally better, but requires holding every price reading at once. We use the quarterly average and say so.
  • Prices are what was recorded, not live. Retailers change prices continuously. Figures here describe the quarter, not this moment. See how we track prices.
