    Good, but not perfect.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2016
Fed up with dropping into a sofa with stretched springs I decided to treat myself to quality chair and stool to relieve an aching back.Delivered within a week of ordering and advised of shipping and the hour of calling by the carrier I received a largish box from the polite & helpful gentleman who was good enough to haul it from the ground floor to my flat. The 'Oriental Leather Company' name along with a dragon logo on the box confirmed what it was and I eagerly tore into the box to be greeted by the aroma of leather. Quite a few individually cloth or foam wrapped components along with a page of assembly instructions and fixings (alan key and spanner included) were contained within and emptied onto the floor, wrapped and examined. Most looked in order but the bases for chair and stool especially had the strong odour of wood glue, were finished only on the upper side and the lower being rough and at points unfinished, cleaned up with the careful use of a sharp edge. (For this I deduct one star, it would have been more but . . .)Assembly was marred only by the fact that I did it myself, some of the more fiddly aspects took some figuring out and there were a couple of dis- and re-assemblies were things got turned around. In just over an hour, tea break included, I stood in front of the recliner chair surprised and gladdened that it looked better than the displayed image then the test . . . the sitting test, placing rather than having to drop into the chair was a joy especially as when I eased back I was enveloped by the comfort of the chair. The reclining action did squeak at first but a little oil solved that problem. The stool was put together next and much simpler than the chair thankfully, within fifteen minutes I sat back and rested my feet on the stool to assess TV watching posture . . . impressed. The height of the stool complements the chair appropriately and the luxurious padding on both chair & stool are enough to provide for a pleasant and relaxing experience as is intended by the manufacturer. In summary, though I am displeased at the rough finishing on the undersides of the wooden bases of chair and stool they are firm and stable for purpose, resting and swivelling with no erratic movement or judder. The chair is plush, comfortable and supportive, the height suitable for easier sitting and standing (I'm 5' 10') with a self-righting reclining action that allows for stretching without strain and relaxing with feet up on a stool set at just the right height.I am satisfied with my purchase, it'll do.

    Good...But Only While It Lasts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2015
I was quite pleased with this for the initial period. Comfortable, with a nice reclining action, albeit non-lockable, and a relatively tough feeling covering. But here we are, 18 months into ownership, and the frame has given way. There's now no support on the left hand side and it's making regular disconcerting crunching noises. I've included a photo so you can see where the metal frame has dangerously sheared away. For reference of anyone thinking of buying this, I'm not a massive guy or anything. 5'9" tall and size Large in most male tops, but the chair has proven to be unsuitable for regular use.Edit: I've been in touch with Oriental Leather and they have been excellent in dealing with the problem I had. Very quickly sent out a replacement subframe for me to switch out and even provided some helpful telephone advice for the repair process. The chair is now back to how comfortable it was originally, so I've bumped my score to 3 stars.

Well constructed and very comfortable chair
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 July 2017
The chair arrived within 2 days of ordering. I was contacted by the seller to arrange delivery. The chair arrived in a large box each piece was individually wrapped in a cloth bag. All fittings together with spanner and allen key were included. I managed to assemble it myself which was quite an effort, would have been easier and quicker with 2 people. The instructions could have been more helpful. The chair is very stylish comfortable and well constructed. I am very pleased with it and would buy from this company again - excellent customer service. Definitely would recommend.

    The Mandalay
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2014
I've wanted this chair for over a year now. I initially wanted the cream but that is no longer available so opted for this colour instead. It certainly was a pleasure doing business with Oriental Leather. The box was smaller than I was anticipating, but still was difficult to manoeuvre to the lift and to my flat. On opening the box you immediately get an appreciation of the quality of parts that go into assembling this chair and foot stool. The main fixtures are contained within a shrink-wrapped plastic and cardboard container, with each part clearly identified. These fixtures certainly are heavy duty given the weight of them. The instructions are perhaps the weakest link when it comes to this item, showing essentially nine diagrams. Apart from that I assembled it without any major difficulty. I was unsure about the connecting pins as it seemed these would not go in fully. Rob from Oriental Leather said that they should go in fully, so I disassembled and found that when the holes were aligned with the pins, tapping them gently with a hammer pushed them in sufficiently to line up with the threads on both sides of the chair. I found using a small flat-headed screwdriver was useful in aligning these holes and others. Certainly if this is assembled by one person using small screwdrivers this will speed the assembly process up. The instructions suggest two people, but I managed by myself, and I have the physique of Mr Muscle. Having completed the assembly I am delighted with what I have got. It looks like a chair and foot stool that would cost as much as five times more than I paid. It is exceptionally comfortable. It is inevitable that I will fall asleep on it. The materials, leather, wood and the fixtures are all of very high quality. I appreciate using a product sourcing it leather from off-cuts, reducing wastage, and passing these savings on to the customer. I am very happy, and would recommend this product and Oriental Leather to other customers.

    Nice looking.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 July 2021
We like the appearance of the cream colour covering material called bonded leather (which is a mixture of leather and other materials bonded together to look like leather) and the wooden base. Quite comfortable to sit on but could do with more lumbar support in the sitting position. Fairly high seat so easy to get in and out of. (Some seats are very low and so more difficult to get out of for people with restricted mobility.) Biggest negative is that it is difficult to assemble with the instructions being rather poor.

    Very comfortable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2013
OK, it's a cheep Chinese chair, but I love it. Came in quite a large box, before the expected delivery date. Pretty good instructions to put it together and the required tools. They say best with two people...the only bit of construction where another person would have been useful was the final fitting of the back to the base of the chair. But I even managed that on my own.there seems to be some argument as to what "Bonded" leather actually is, but this chair looks like leather, gently creaks like leather when you adjust your position and is oh so comfortable. I can fall asleep in it fully reclined. Now I'm six foot two inches tall and weigh about twelve and a half stone, and i find it quite big enough, someone carrying a few more pounds may just think it a bit narrow, it's a personal thing. The foot stool is great, inclined at just the right angle when you've got your feet up. I'm delighted with this chair and stool set and when my decorating is finished i will definitely be buying a second one. Very good value for money and well made. Recommended.

    QUALITY AT THE RIGHT PRICE
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2016
Ordered, received, assembled (just me) sat in it, love it. I also have another which cost about twice the price of this new one and is now about 20 years old and still lovely but the backrest padding is a bit flat now hence buying the Mandalay which is quality and certainly VALUE FOR MONEY - I realised that as I assembled it. I notice that the Mandalay backrest has an excellent lumbar support and the seating position is ergonomically correct. Whoever designed it, knew the correct "shape" for good sitting posture.Just one tiny concern - a creak/squeek as the leather surfaces slide over each other as I recline or sit up. ANYONE KNOW WHETHER A WAX POLISH OR SOMETHING WOULD ALLEVIATE THAT OR MAKE IT WORSE ?? WHAT WORKS ??

    Comfortable and Supportive
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2018
I bought this chair for my dad who is facing health issues and wanted a nice chair to relax in when not in bed. It's a super-comfy chair, very supportive of your back and when you recline in it, the position stays put. It's not overly wide which was important for us to be able to fit into the bedroom. The leather is nice and soft.Delivery was great - we received a call from the seller to arrange a convenient day. Assembly was ok - it took a while but I managed to do it all myself. The reason I am not rating this 5 stars is that the screws at the bottom have come slightly loose a couple of times since purchase - although I put this down to a lot of use and it was easy to resolve quickly by tightening them again.

    BONDED LEATHER?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 June 2021
Looks good but I can't believe there is any leather in it. Seems more like pvc but don't know what to expect with bonded leather. I don't think it will last very long and many of the z ips had no tag on them. Stitching also looks precarious. I was surprised how light it was. Still you gets what you pay for.

good chair for comfort not so good manufactuing quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2020
First the bad points instructions very poor, holes in cloth don`t match the bolt holes, some bolt threads were pitted fortunately for me I have a die and tap set which allowed me to fix the issue. On the good side once built it is a good looking and comfortable chair looks much more expensive that it is.

Customer questions and answers

  • Please can you inform me if this chair is adjustable height wise? Thanks.
Can anyone suggest a similar looking recliner chair which does have adjustable height?
  • Hi, I was wondering if this chair is exactly the same as the Shanghai? I like the round base better but the photos of the Shanghai look better
Hi, the round base is the only difference between the Shanghai and the Mandalay. Both are made to exactly the same specification and from come the same manufacturer. Best regards, Rob.
  • Could anyone post some photos of their chair? I just want to see how it looks in a real setting.
No as we don't have them anymore. Quality not that brilliant only lasted a couple of years
  • could you let me know if this chair is OK for my 110 kg husband
Hi Mirela, the recommended weight limit for the chair is 115KG so your husband should be fine. If you have any concerns or queries you can call us on 0800 644 5064. Best regards, Dominic
