• Are these plain white
  Yes

• Is the white a distressed look?
  No. Its matte white plastic. No distressed effect at all.

• Could it be put outside on a garden wall?
  It could go outside if you brought it in every night and didn't leave it outside. The backing is just hardboard, it wouldn't be waterproof. It would look lovely as decoration on a sunny day.

• Can it be free standing?
  If you want to lean it against something then yes. It doesn't have a stand as it's designed to hang. Finding a hook is difficult because the hanger is shallow. I had to use a nail. Screw would do.
