Infrared Heating panels - an effective method of heating?

Currently, when deciding to install heating at home, we have many different methods to choose from, characterized by different principles of operation. In addition to the principle of operation, they also often differ in efficiency as well as labor costs.

One of the most effective methods of heating our Infrared heating panels. It has been assumed that heating with infrared panels is the closest to the most natural form of heating, i.e. the sun.

The claim is not completely unfounded, because the operation of infrared heaters, as heating panels are interchangeably called - is based on the emission of infrared radiation - exactly as emitted by the sun, which we feel as heat.

Types of infrared radiation Heating panels are classified as direct heaters. They work by moving electromagnetic waves. This type of heating uses the ability to reflect infrared radiation, refract it, focus, and absorb it. The outer shell of the heating plate is made of a special material that enables the maximum transmission of thermal energy in infrared, with a wavelength ranging from 7 to 10 µm.

There are 3 basic types of infrared waves:

  • shortwave (IR-A)
  • medium wave (IR-B)
  • long-term (IR-C)

The rule, in this case, is that the shorter the wavelength, the more intense the heat emitted, but it is also synonymous with the emission of light. With regard to infrared heating panels, it should be noted that the more visible light is emitted, the greater the loss of energy. Therefore, before buying a device, it is worth finding out what kind of waves it generates

Radiant heating and convector heating - the main difference

The main difference between traditional heating methods and panel heating is the heat carrier.

Traditional heating increases the air temperature. According to the principle of air circulation in the room, the heat rises, thereby making the temperature in the upper part of the room higher than the temperature at the floor. Thereby, there is a feeling of discomfort called "cold feet and hot head" caused by the difference in temperature at different altitudes. This is the case, for example, with radiators and other convector heating devices.

In contrast, infrared heating does not heat the air, but all the boundary surfaces in the room, e.g .:

  • walls,
  • floors,
  • ceilings,
  • furniture,
  • items,
  • ... and even people!
