Great professional kitchen knife in affordable price, low edge retention but easy to sharpen
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2021
This is a really nice knife. By nice I mean esthetically pleasing but also really well made.So what makes it great?Let's start with the looks. It is an 8-inch stainless steel chef knife, with a beautiful fiberglass handle. Being a professional knife, the metal runs through the whole length and width of the handle, and is attached with 3 nicely spaced rivets. That makes the knife really solid in use, well balanced and safe from picking up moisture. The shape of the handle is ergonomic and fits the hand nicely, reducing fatigue. The shape of the blade offers security with a non-sharp end, as well as the long edge by the handle, which protects your fingers. The thickness is just right for me - a good balance between heavy duty and flexible blade. What about the quality of steel? It is German made, which already means something. But the true strength is in the symbol X50CrMov15. Long story short, it contains 0.5% of Carbon, which gives it low edge retention but reduced hardness. This means it needs regular sharpening, but it's very easy to sharpen. The manufacturer went a bit high with giving the hardness as 58 HRC - the brackets are between 52 and 56...Still in the upper range. The rest of the 'code' says that it has 15% of Chromium, which makes it super resistant to rust and corrosion (the minimum level is 11% so 15 is really high). It also contains molybdenum and vanadium as well as some other elements, which improve either strength of steel, its hardness or machinability. The conclusion is that this is a professional blade that can be used at home kitchen, as well as by the industry. In fact this steel is very popular with professionals due to its relatively low price, given the really good standard. This is a high- to medium-end quality knife. Its price closing on £30 shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. A really high-end knife from well known brands can be 8-10 times more expensive. But at home or in smaller restaurants this knife will be more than enough. I wish the box was slightly tougher made - as you can see mine came slightly damaged. It is an integral part of customer experience for me, especially with an elegant knife such as this. It is a small issue though and I highly recommend this knife.Thank you for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.

Outstanding value for money. ?[Chef Knife 8"]
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2021
I was really pleasantly surprised by this knife. There is an awful lot of tat advertised & some of the claims made by manufacturers & advertisers are just either coming from a place of ignorance or are being actively misleading.I like knives, both as a tool & as works of art & over the years have had many, too many my partner would say. So it's usually me that's going into great detail about metals & materials, grinds & balance. But it appears Marcel [the top reviewer for this knife] has done all that with his excellent review which I'd encourage you to read.So what do you get when you open the Amazon box, well inside is a nice quality cardboard presentation/storage box. When the flip up lid is opened you'll see the CHEFBUD knife nestled in a high-density foam that has been cut to shape. This is nice as it means that there's no real chance of the knife becoming damaged in transport & gives you somewhere to keep it safe when not in use. The box is also nice should you wish to gift this to someone. The knife itself is an 8" chef knife. The chef knife shape is a real jack of all trades, you can perform pretty much all tasks with it from breaking down medium sized carcasses, prepping fish & doing most of the required cuts on fruit & veg. Some with smaller hands may find an 8" blade a little large; preferring a 6" one. But I find the 8" gives a little extra reach & power especially when it comes to larger boned pieces of beef or the larger & more robust Autumnal vegetables. The blade itself is made of X50CrMov15 steel. [Not sure why the Germans decided to change the "C" to an "X" at the beginning to denote Carbon?] Its a German made steel, though I'm pretty sure the knife is Chinese made. Of course not all German steel is great but this is nice stuff. [See Marcel's review for details] It's not stupidly hard; many think that the harder the steel the better. Yes once hard steel is sharp it retains that edge for a long time, but if you need to try & sharpen that steel at a later date then you'll run into problems doing it at home without special equipment. Very hard steel can also be too brittle & that's how you can end up with chipped blades or broken tips. The other end of the spectrum was the old dark carbon steel knives, they were quite soft, but sharpened like a dream. But you'd be sharpening them a few times a day & they rusted or stained at the drop of a hat. So I'm happy with the chosen X50CrMov15 steel, It'll probably need a light touch up at least once a week, but you can do this easily with a simple home sharpener, it wont take long & you'll get a great cutting edge. The shape of the blade is nice, its not too deep or too thick, so it's nice & nimble for boning or filleting. I've also found that food doesn't build up on the sides when chopping & the belly of the blade is nicely curved for rocking cuts. When doing my mise en place it manages everything from chunky rolling cuts, julienne, chiffonade to brunoise with ease. The heel & bolster are nicely shaped for when you want to choke your hand up on the blade for certain techniques, & they flow into the nicely formed handle smoothly. The knife is full tang & the G10 handle scales [G10 = glass-based epoxy resin laminate] are tightly fitted with no gaps or wobbles. This is important as any gaps could let food in which is unhygienic & the gaps or rough edges can cause blisters. The handle is nicely shaped to allow a variety of grips comfortably & reduce fatigue. You don't want to be prepping food with tired or sore hands, that's how accidents happen. At the end of the handle is the butt. This helps balance the knife & can to used to grind or tenderise in the kitchen, though there are better tools for that. But the knife does have a good balance, I found it very nimble & handy especially for an 8" knife, it actually feels much smaller in the hand. The handle is held on by three rivets, two plain ones & a mosaic central pin. [Mosaic pins are mainly for decoration though in case of glue failure they can apply enough force to hold the scales in place.]At present the CHEFBUD knife is reduced from £23.99 down to £21.59. Either of those prices are very good value for the quality of knife you're getting. I'd have expected to pay, & would pay a bit more for it. At present CHEFBUD only do this knife, I'd be very interested to see what else they come out with as this offering gets full marks from me.

A high quality German steel Chef's knife at less than £30 ~ THAT"S GREAT VALUE
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2021
Very well presented in an upmarket style/quality boxThe knife once out of the bag looks the businessThe knife once into a red onion ~ IS THE BUSINESS ! ! !I have a selection on German and French kitchen knives and my current favourite is a French Sab.10" Chef's knife. It's big and heavy and old (1972) and it takes an edgeSo I judge this extremely good value for quality German steel ~ doesn't say where the knife was madeIt has a comfortable handle and I have large hands ~ it feel good in the hand and this is important in a Chef's knifeThe blade is very sharp out of the box and I found the blade slim in profileThis helps it cut through as the heel ot the knife offers little resistanceWhen using this CHEFBUD knife I found it much lighter than my previous go to favouriteI also found it well balancedChopping vegetables is quick and straightforward if use use the correct knife technique but if you don't MIND YOUR FINGERS this is a SHARP knifeI've had it a few weeks in my kitchen and its still very sharp, but all knives get blunted in useI ran it though my fine sharpening stone and a terrific edge came backThe steel is very good ~ sharpens well, cuts well and stays sharpAlong with the smart box this would make a terrific present or avoid waiting for Christmas and treat yourself to oneIt's a shame Amazon don't sell a whole range of CHEFBUD knives.OMG ~ I've just read the first review by Marcel ~ thank you for the detail and facts ~ I stand humbled by your knowledge and detail in your review.

Elegant, well balanced and practical chefs knife
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2021
I was delighted to receive this knife which is beautifully made in a classic chef pattern. The blade is very sharp, although at this point i dont know how well it will sharpen subsequently and hold an edge. the knife claims to be high carbon steel, but is actually stainless. better quality older knives were often made of carbon steel which was harder and gave a keener edge than stainless - this is less of an issue with modern alloys. the downside of carbon steel was that it rusted and so had to be kept dry and could also taint acidic fruit cut with it. The steel is german we are told - its is true that germany makes very fine steel and some of the worlds finest knives - it is also true that german steel makes wheelbarrows, so without more information it is impossible to say the quality of what we have here.the blade is thin - more like a japanese than a german knife - but that is if anything an advantage.finally the price - at under £30 it is a bargain for a high quality knife compared to say the (fabulous) wusthoff knives where a similar knife would be more like £100. I presume these are chinese made, though there is no information on the boxchefbud only supply one knife currently so no good if you are looking for a set. however procook sells possibly identical 'x50' knives (also claiming german steel) where a wide variety are available (ive never used one however)

Beautiful & high quality german stainless steel - Superb
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2021
This is such a beautiful and high quality chef's knife. This is easy to hold and the cutting edge is amazingly good across a range of vegetables and other cooked ans non-cooked meats / fish / seafood. I really love it as it is so well designed that it isnt any fatigue in daily use for long periods. The handle is contoured and designed to be comfortable in your hand yet safe as to give a good grip and be non-slip with wet hands. The blade has a continues tongue into the centre of the handle and the handle therfore is a sandwich with this tongue in the middle. Three solid rivets joint both bits of wood and the tongue all together. The blade comes with an exceptional razor sharpness to the blade and i would urge a lot of care with this knife and where you choose to keep it. If your serious about cooking this is a must buy for your kitchen, highly recommended, Andrew.

Sharp, good grip, easy to use and high quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 October 2021
I have never bought an expensive knife or set of knives and have simple requirements as I am typically cutting vegetables such as onions, celery, carrots, tomatoes etc.Using this knife has been a great experience. It is great to hold, you can grip it well and it is strong. It is very sharp so you have to be careful as you can get a serious cut if you are not careful. Cutting harder vegetables has been really easy for me to do. It doesn't put much pressure on the wrist and you can cut a large volume with relative ease.Over the last few weeks of using it, I felt that over time it's sharpness has reduced so it will be interesting to see what happens over the next 6 months and maybe it will need sharpening.Overall, I am really enjoying using this and it has made my life much easier in the kitchen.

    Strong with good weight
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2021
This is overall a good addition to the kitchen its got a strong handle with a compfotable grip.It is a weighty knife but not unbalanced. It is sharp has edge protectors to put on when not in use a storage box. After use I have been washing it in the dishwasher and this hasn't been a problem it comes up gleaming.Altho it's sharp I have got sharper knives that glide a bit easier than this oneThis knife has been brilliant for fresh fruit or veg. And cuts thru raw meat easily but when it comes to a stuff like turnip even large potato's this knife does start to struggle and takes some force. Like I said I have other knives cheap knives that cut thru stuff like turnip alot easier so I did expect a bit more from this one. How ever that's only a minor thing overall it's still a good strong sturdy knife.

    Even cuts fresh bread easily.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2021
Blimey this is an excellent knife and a superb all rounder. I use it to cut fresh bread, fruit, veg, meat and fish. It made light work of every item presented to it. No heavy pressure is needed to cut harder veg such as a carrot. It handles soft squishy food such as tomatoes with no issues and slices neatly. My main surprise was how well it sliced through very soft fresh uncut bread, it glided through like it was a hot knife through butterand have a neat slice. I was actually able to slice thinner than I usually can with a bread knife, I no longer use a bread knife for cutting bread. This knife isn't that expensive either when compared to others of this quality, its certainly a great all rounder and if you only have space or finances for one good knife then this would be ideal.

    German efficiency at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 October 2021
Whenever i see something thats German made i think of quality, and i wasn't disappointed with this knife.I have arthritic hands and don't manage knives very well at all. But had no problems with this knife. It's heavy as you would expect from a quality knife ,so i can't hold it for long. But there really is no need to as it slices through everything so easily in seconds. This is an 8inch non serrated stainless steel knife. It came boxed so this would be an ideal gift for someone moving into their first or new home.My husband used to be a chef so has a thing about good quality knives. He was extremely surprised that you could get such a top quality stainless steel knife for only £23.99Highly recommended.

Chefbud Chef Knife - Still Needs Sharpening After a Few Weeks
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2021
It’s a brilliant knife right nice as still so sharp as when it first was. Yet it’s the price tag that I don’t like about it very high in my opinion for just one knife. Ok it’s a brilliant one for cutting up produce I need it for. However I find most knives are like this at first then begin it become blunter over time and use. Already we have noticed it’s not quite on par as it was when used fir the first few weeks or so. Fast forward a few weeks and already had to sharpen it for when doing a roast chicken dinner.Expensive and yes you will need to sharpen it after a time like most knives and for a brand I have never come across before would shop around too before deciding.
