However, unless I drink it in minutes I'm sipping on cool coffee so was looking for an alternative. I have become accustomed to drinking coffee from a porcelain cup (nothing fancy - IKEA coffee cup). And was considering these USB heated mats for £10. When looking at Ember I thought they looked great - although very expensive when compared to the £1.25 IKEA coffee cups, but to keep my coffee warm it may be worth it. Sadly, I was disappointed. The cups are plastic, and feel plastic. And are delicate so need to be handwashed. And certainly not worth £100.

Bluetooth constantly disconnects and you need to re-pair daily. Firmware update fails 100% of the time.The mug itself is uncleanable. No matter what I try I cannot get the tea stains out of this thing. Got plenty of white mugs and none look anything like this one.I would not recommend this at all. All it does is keep tea relatively warm in a filthy cup. £20 maybe.

Battery life is nothing like the 1.5 hours claimed and when the mug is keeping coffee hot whilst on the charger the battery does not charge (this is not a fault, it is built like that). After fully charging an empty mug, taking it off the charger and filling it with hot coffee the battery level falls very quickly so that it really can only be used for one cup of coffee before the battery runs out unless you drink it too quickly. What a disappointment!

I couldn’t justify it at the time but I now work in an office / retail and find myself many times gulping cold coffee (to not waste it) as another coffee is made. So this should solve that problem and now I don’t have cold coffee :-).Update:- After a week of using the mug daily and being extremely carful stirring the coffee marks / scratches started to appear and after a month it’s messed up. The company have been extremely helpful and have replaced the mug but I highly recommend that you do not touch the cup with a spoon. I’ve looked for a silicon spoon but for the time being I’ll be making a drink in another mug and pouring it in. I have to say though that it is extremely handy in work and never return back to my desk to find a cold cup of coffee... :-)

It’s a great idea, but the mug is completely dependent on the app, which doesn’t seem to connect with android (was bought as a gift for my wife who has an android smartphone and could not get the app to find the mug). Tried connecting with my iPhone which connected straight away. Would strongly suggest avoiding the Ember mug if you have an Android phone.

Being able to choose the exact temperature to hold your drink, app notifications for when it's ready. On the few occassions that I've been able to get the app to work, its a fantastic piece of kit...But the App. Ohhhhh the App. Awful design, pairing issues with the mug requiring me to reset the mug EVERTIME i wanted to pair. The app would very frequently just crash out of nowhere, and the UI feels janky. Ember, get your damn app together. For something this expensive, you have absolutely no right to market the app as functional in the state it's in.IMO, I wouldn't buy this until EMBER fix their app. Not happy.

Suddenly my few precious cups of coffee every day were more important than ever. So I got some coffee plate warmers that initially worked them would never heat up properly. I tried a thermos which kept my coffee either too hot for too long or then too cold.So I took the plunge and bought the Ember 2 in black. First thing is that it does what it is supposed to. I now have my coffee at 57 degrees c for as long as I want. You don’t appreciate every sip of coffee being at the temperature you prefer.Then the quality. The mug is lovely to hold. And whilst you hold it your coffee is not cooling. The app is easy to set up. It feels great, looks great and adds to the coffee drinking experience.Now if only it worked through wireless charging like my iPhone, it would be perfect. I guess that will be the Ember 3 at some point.The best way to value an item like the Ember is the cost per drink. Given drink a mug of coffee 4 times per day everyday, if this lasts me three years that is 2p per mug of coffee. 2p per mug for a perfect temperature and experience. Think what people pay for a coffee machine and coffee pods.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2021Great mug spoilt by poor AppThe brilliant mug is let down by its app. It keeps the drink at the exact temperature off the base for an hour and a half and all day if kept on it. Bought another base so it can be used in both the office and the living room without any faffing about. The app is poor, doesn't allow itself to be updated and its functionality could be better. Always clean the mug thoroughly once finished (and dry it) and NEVER use a metal spoon (use a plastic one). Yes it's pricey, but if you have to keep remaking tea as it has become cold, it will eventually pay for itself (well that's what I keep telling myself!)

Battery lasts more than long enough for me and the coaster is unobtrusive enough that it fits on my desk giving me infinite time if needed to finish that cuppa.Yes, pricey indulgence but I think in terms of time saved, the additional amount of liquid I’m drinking and net comfort/ happiness it more than pays back.

- How do you clean the cup? Tea stains remain after hand washing with washing-up liquid and bleach.I use "Astonish Cup Clean" It's a tea and coffee stain remover (you can buy it on Amazon and some supermarkets) it's thorough, quick and safe, I swear by it.
- why is the product nearly double the price on ember’s own website??? 129.95 GBP on their own siteEmber UK prices are same as on amazon. Make sure you are looking at the same size. The Ember 2 comes in two sizes.
- Can it go in a dishwasher?I would say a definite no. It has a chargeable battery in the base. It can get wet whilst hand washing, but make sure the contacts on bottom of cup are dried thoroughly, or it will take ages to charge
- How you charge the coaster?The mug comes with an adapter that plugs into a wall socket and then the coaster. The coaster has no battery and no way of holding a charge. It’s only for charging the cup and heating the drink (keeping the drink hot).
