Detailed Description

The Bidex 500 plinth heater is a high quality heating solution for your kitchen. Using the space under the cupboards instead of taking up precious wall area, it frees up more space to maximize your kitchen work area Connecting directly to the central heating system and fitting tidily in the plinth space under a unit or cupboard, heat is blown through a heat exchanger into the room by a low noise 2 speed fan. The fan convector automatically switches on and off with the central heating system and because it runs off the central heating system, it is much cheaper to run than electric only heaters. Also there are no worries about the build-up of dust that causes overheating in electric heaters, and the constant cleaning they require. How it works The Bidex plinth heater is easy to install and use. The unit switches itself on and off automatically when your central heating system comes on and switches off. Inside the unit is a temperature switch which when the central heating comes on and the hot water starts to circulate round the pipes, it senses the hot water and switches the fan on automatically. When the central heating is switched off or the house thermostat switches off the heating, the water in the pipes cools down and so the fan switches off. There is no need to switch this unit on and off manually. If you need more heat all you do is switch the fan to boost which will push more hot air into the room. There is also a manual override switch which allows you to switch the fan off if you do not require it Did you know Fan heaters are up to 24% more efficient than standard radiators Technical Details Heat output: Normal 896 Watt (3057BTU); Boost 1166 Watt (3979 BTU). Dimensions: Cut out - 320mm wide; 100mm high. Depth of heater (including pipes at back) - 400mm. Grille dimensions: 500mm wide; 100mm high. Really loud and doesn’t turn off in a timely manner.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2019
Edited this a bit since using a bit more... almost works as advertised, but...We used to have one of these in our old house and it was very effective at pumping heat into the kitchen. This one is very similar but be warned, it’s not very subtle... it’s actually really loud, even on the slower setting.Even thought it turns on fine when a temperature change is recognised, it’s also supposed to turn off when the temperature equalises. It does but it takes ages, and in the meantime blows cold air around the room. Couple this with the noise and it’s just really irritating. So all in all, not that great at all.

Thought I'd give it a go but disappointed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2020
I've been thinking about a Hydronic Plinth Heater for a while and despite reading some of the unfavourable reviews for this product thought I'd give it a go as the balance of positive outweighed the negative. On a plus side, it's very easy to fit, the hoses and valves you get to connect to the heating system are strong and the front panel fits nicely after you've cut a hole in the plinth.i wasn't expecting massive amount of heat from this little heater and I just wanted something to take the chill off the kitchen, as long as your heating water temperature is set to high then this little heater does chuck out an average amount of heat on the slow speed setting but once you turn the fan up it doesn't really perform that well. The most irritating thing about it, and most disappointing, is the noise, it's not just a blowing fan noise but it also has a fine whistle that that is just pitched to be highly irritating. A piece of paper over one of the air intake vents seems to subdue the high pitch so I'll be looking at a diy solution before I take this back out.I echo one of the other users reviews. The fact it switches on when the heating comes on is great but it does blow cold air for a while before the heating warms up and conversely when the heating turns off it again blows cold air for a bit until it senses the heating is off.In short, I wasn't expecting much for the price but the noise outweighs the need for heat so it's switched off mostly!

Its ok, but not a great amount of heat comes out of this
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2019
Its not as effective as a radiator. If you have a large or unusually cold kitchen (we have), I would not get this as it makes little to no difference. Quite noisy too which it doesnt need to be as there isnt much heat to blow into the kitchen, a more gentle fan would have been better as the lowest setting can be heard far outside of the room.

Great value for money and performance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2021
Really good value for money and heats a reasonably large kitchen up to a comfortable temperature really quickly. It is not silent but the noise is not too annoying unlike the fitting kit - would it have been too costly to include black screws to secure the unit and front panel? The zinc coated ones stand out like a sore thumb - now hunting for a permanent black marker to colour them!

After looking around at various heating solutions I came across this one. I have removed the central heating radiator and replaced it with this, fitted into plinth under cupboard.Easy to install, looks good, complete with different fascias, stainless steel, brown and white, and valved hoses, - no brainer.

If you have a central heating boiler be it a standard one with a hot water cylinder or the more modern combie boiler where the hot water is heated directly when the hot tap is turned on and your radiators are also powered from the same boiler then you can fit this kitchen heater. If your boiler/on demand heater does not power your central heating radiators and only heats your hot water then you cannot. The ones I have fitted have been replacements for kitchen radiators and are very effective even if the fan is switched off. Sorry if this has dragged on but hope it answers your question? see less
  • Can this be used with a separate thermostat as the kitchen can get pretty warm at times.
yes you can use a separate room thermostat. just fit it in the power supply to the plinth heater socket.
