Customer Review
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2020Fantastic deviceFantastic device. Really quiet, enough so to not disturb sleep. makes your room air fresh and clean, leaving you feeling relaxed and clearheaded. So glad I bought this.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2020Mostly a humidifierThis is really a humidifier with purifier, rather than the other way around. The reason I have drawn this conclusion is that the display on the front tells you not about the amount of impurities in the air, but about the humidity level. In a damp British home that is not what we need. For an office it might be more useful, but simply as a purifier I do not find it very good compared to my other air purifier (which does not use water, and the display on which tells you about the level of impurities). There are other models of this item with a coloured band which tells you about the level of impurities, but apparently the HD50U-L does not have this capability (it's the HD50U-E which has it). The coloured band on the machine I have has always shone green, no matter the level of odour in the room, so that seems to be correct.I have tried to run it in the kitchen to get rid of cooking smells. That doesn't work at all. I can run it for an hour after cooking, and the smells are not reduced. I don't want to fill this with water and use the "spray" function, as I have a damp problem that I don't want to increase. And when you try to use it dry, it simply isn't very effective. The instructions are quite complicated, as befitting a piece of office equipment. It does have automatic adjustments, eg it will work at higher power when needed, and switch to lower power once the air is clean. But there are a lot of modes and functions, and I feel like this machine is trying to do too much, rather than doing one thing well. My Philips 2000i air purifier is much more specialised, and much more effective. You switch it on, it tells you how clean your air is, it cleans the air. That's it. I recommend getting that one instead.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2020Cleaner Air or Just Hot Air?I won't pretend for one moment to fully understand all the technical specifications and features included in this Sharp UA-HD50U-L Air Purifier. I mean "PLASMACLUSTER ION GENERATOR" sounds cool but it sounds to me like something you would hear on Star Trek - "Captain, we've lost power to the PIG engine."What drew my attention to this item was the fact that it claimed to be able to purify the air and being someone who suffers from indoor allergies - I jumped at the chance to reduce my antihistamine use. So while I'll let you read through the wealth of information and features on this page (very well detailed from Amazon), I will focus on my experience and how well it worked.Thankfully despite being feature packed it is easy to use and to understand the various options and settings. There are a lot of buttons on top of the machine, but the instructions keep things simple and clear - it won't take long to get to grips with. As you would expect for a three-figure price tag, the build quality is high while keeping the weight (empty) pretty light. It came well packaged (a box with packing in another box) to ensure safe arrival (I think most customers have had bad experiences with couriers at one point or another).During use there is some noise (which is totally expected) - it is a bit louder than my older dehumidifier which was surprising - but its a better "pitch" and softer sound so it's actually easier to ignore and get used to. I opted to leave the machine on "intelligent" mode for most of the time. This means the machine automatically monitors the humidity and temperature of adjusts itself as required. It works well to circulate the air in your room with the HEPA filter removing dust and impurities as it does so.In a "large" room I think it would struggle to do so effectively but there is a larger size should you have colossal sizes rooms. I took advantage of the dehumidifier function by placing it in a double cupboard with some damp and it performed well. While I said that I wouldn't focus too much on features (as this page does a far better job than I could), I will just mention that I was pleased with the auto shut-off and indicators that displayed both Air quality and the status of the filter. The fact that it switches on and off as required makes day to day use easier and it was pretty cool to be able to monitor the air quality. So how did it perform?I am glad to report that while not fully understanding "how" it made a definite and noticeable difference to air quality. It removes odours in the air such as dampness but more surprising was its ability to remove cooking smells (I use a lot of garlic and cumin) which keeps my neighbours happy. I've used this in all my rooms (excluding my bathroom as it is tiny and taking into account electrical safety) and it does make the indoor air feel, smell and taste cleaner. While some people might ask "why not just open a window?" my answer is you can still do that, but this Air Purifier goes further than that - it cleans the air, removing dust and impurities while helping to circulate the around the room. Not only did it help my allergies but it helped me sleep better (maybe its my imagination or maybe it was down to the cleaner air and automatic monitoring of my environment). Overall if you are looking for an Air Purifier unit then this one looks good and works well. It is definitely worth considering.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2021Great product but flawed supportThis is a truly great product. We've had it for several months and it's been great. It is very quiet, it does it's magic with cleaning air and humidifying. I no longer wake up middle of the night with a blocked nose due to dry air. You should buy this with confidence but please read my point below so you don't make the same mistake like I did. After about a month or so of constant use, filters needed cleaning. I have followed the manual where one of the filters needs to be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes. You can also use a little bit of Citric Acid in order to get it cleaned more thoroughly. That is where things went sideways for me unfortunately. I have cleaned everything according to the instructions and 2 days after, I noticed a stench in the air. This stench was coming from purifier. I have emailed Sharp asking for advise and got no reply. I've tried cleaning it again and it didn't help, the smell comes back and if Purifier isn't used, it becomes absolutely unbearable.Bottom line is, buy this product with confidence but don't repeat my mistake. I am trying to get hold of a replacement filter which is proving to be a little challenging. Hopefully I will find a way to get rid of the smell without having to replace the whole product.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2020Noticeable difference in air qualityThe best thing about this air purifier is there's a noticeable difference in the air you're breathing in. It's a difficult experience to describe but air in the room just feels cleaner and lighter to breathe in and out.As someone who lives in the city, it's very satisfying to get away polluted city and have clean air right inside your own home!Overall, I'd recommend this quality product, you can tell it's well engineered and well made.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2021Love itGood unit. Nice build quality. Excellent packaging. Very responsive to environmental conditions. The unit seems to be particularly sensitive to my glasses of wine (alcohol), the gas boiler heating water (some gaseous by-product), flapping of bed sheets (dust), and farts (eugh).
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2021Keeps the air cleanNeeds to top up water quite frequently but it is quiet and does the job well
